Frequency Regulation From Commercial Building HVAC Demand

چکیده
| The expanding penetration of nondispatchable renewable resources within power system generation portfolios is motivating the development of demand-side strategies for balancing generation and load. Commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) loads are potential candidates for providing such demand-response (DR) services as they consume significant energy and because of the temporal flexibility offered by their inherent thermal inertia. Several ancillary services markets have recently opened up to participation by DR resources, provided they can satisfy certain performance metrics. We discuss different control strategies for providing frequency regulation DR from commercial HVAC systems and components, and compare performance results from experiments and simulation. We also present experimental results from a single 30 000-m2 office building and quantify the DR control performance using standardized performance criteria. Additionally, we evaluate the cost of delivering this service by comparing the energy consumed while providing DR against a counterfactual baseline.

Experimental Evaluation of Frequency Regulation from Commercial Building HVAC system
Automated demand response can be a valuable resource for ancillary services in the power grid. This paper illustrates this value with the first experimental demonstration of frequency regulation from commercial building Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. The experiments were conducted in a 40,000 sq. ft. commercial building located at the University of Florida campus. Deta...

With the introduction of volatile renewable energy sources into the grid, the need for inexpensive ancillary service increases. We propose a method to provide ancillary service by using the flexibility of demand in commercial building HVAC (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning) systems. In particular, we show how a regulation command transmitted by a balancing authority can be tracked by vary...
متن کاملExplaining Inefficiencies in Buildings Providing Ancillary Services
In a power system, having a high level of renewable energy penetration requires a large amount of ancillary services to balance the supply and demand in real time. Commercial buildings have significant thermal capacity and so offer large potential for providing such services. Recent research has shown that the power consumption of the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system can...

We study providing ancillary service to the power grid by using the flexibility of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) systems in commercial buildings. The building HVAC system’s thermal and power consumption models are constructed and key model parameters are estimated from measure data from Pugh Hall of University of Florida. We develop a method for optimal output tracking of a time...

In this paper, we model energy use in commercial buildings using empirical data captured through sMAP, a campus building data portal at UC Berkeley. We conduct at-scale experiments in a newly constructed building on campus. By modulating the supply duct static pressure (SDSP) for the main supply air duct, we induce a response on the main supply fan and determine how much ancillary power flexibi...
